The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has removed import restrictions on horses from Texas entering Canada that were put in place due to a 2014 outbreak of vesicular stomatitis (VS) in the state.
The restrictions on the imports of horses from Colorado are still in effect. It is recommended that horse owners avoid going to this state.
Current import requirements for horses entering Canada may be found using the CFIA Automated Import Reference System (AIRS). To determine specific import requirements for each horse, specific parameters that refer to each horse’s circumstances will need to be entered and customized import requirements will be provided.
Various US states may also prohibit movement into state without permit/certification/testing/post-entry testing. The Canadian horse owner should check state requirements before movement.
Further information on vesicular stomatitis, its clinical signs and transmission can be found on the CFIA Vesicular Stomatitis Fact Sheet.
